Drinking Matcha is more than just enjoying green tea—it’s a cultural ritual deeply rooted in Japanese tradition.

In our previous article, we explored the history and unique features of Matcha.

Today, let’s focus on how to make Matcha at home, without the traditional tools.

When made the traditional way, preparing Matcha requires several specific tools.

These include a handmade bamboo whisk (chasen), a Matcha bowl (chawan), a bamboo scoop (chashaku), a tea sifter, and of course, premium Matcha powder.

However, gathering all these tools can be costly and time-consuming.

Even in Japan, these items are usually sold only at specialty tea shops.

That’s why in this article, we’ll show you the world’s easiest method to prepare Matcha using simple, everyday items.

No need to buy anything fancy—just follow these steps and enjoy healthy, delicious Matcha at home.

A. The Easiest Way to Make Matcha in the World

Matcha powder is extremely fine and doesn’t dissolve easily in water.

One of the biggest challenges when making Matcha is that the powder tends to clump quickly.

In Japan, this is why people use a special bamboo whisk called a chasen.

The thin, firm bamboo fibers help mix the powder thoroughly and create a smooth, foamy texture.

However, a chasen is not something you can easily find unless you visit a specialty Japanese tea shop.

And while electric shakers are another option, we won’t be using one here either.

Instead, we’ll show you the simplest, healthiest way to prepare Matcha—no special tools required.

And it’s no surprise—Matcha is packed with nutrients that are great for both beauty and overall health.

You might be wondering: “Is it really better to drink Matcha instead of coffee?”

“Does it actually help with skincare and wellness?”

In this section, we’ll explore the beauty and health benefits of drinking Matcha daily, along with tips on how to enjoy it effectively—and what to watch out for.

How Is Matcha Different from Green Tea?

Unlike regular green teas like sencha or gyokuro, Matcha is made by grinding whole tea leaves into a fine powder.

Because you drink the entire leaf, either dissolved in water or milk, you consume all the nutrients directly— nothing is wasted.

Matcha is rich in vitamins, minerals, and polyphenols, earning it the nickname “drinkable beauty serum.”

Let’s dive into some of the specific health and beauty benefits Matcha has to offer!

Beauty Benefits of Drinking Matcha Daily

1. Prevents Dark Spots and Dullness: Enhances Brightness and Clarity

Matcha is rich in vitamin C, which helps suppress melanin production—preventing dark spots and promoting a more even skin tone.

It also protects the skin from UV damage and boosts its natural glow.

💡 Great for people who..

2. Anti-Aging Effects: Fights Wrinkles and Sagging

Matcha contains a high concentration of catechins, which are powerful antioxidants that neutralize free radicals and help prevent cellular damage.

This contributes to slowing down the aging process and reducing the risk of lifestyle-related diseases.

Vitamin E in Matcha also improves blood circulation, helping maintain skin firmness and elasticity.

💡 Recommended for those who…

3. Fights Acne and Skin Irritation: Natural Detox Benefits

Packed with dietary fiber, Matcha supports gut health, which plays a key role in clear skin.

A healthier gut promotes the elimination of toxins, helping to reduce breakouts and inflammation.

Additionally, Matcha’s catechins have antibacterial properties that fight acne-causing bacteria.

💡 Ideal for anyone who…

Before exercise: Enhances fat-burning and performance

Avoid before bed: Contains caffeine, which may interfere with sleep

⚠ Important Cautions

Matcha does contain caffeine—though usually less than coffee. Drinking too much can lead to sleep problems, digestive discomfort, or increased heart rate.

Matcha vs. Coffee (Caffeine Comparison):

Matcha: ~30mg per gram → ~60mg per serving (2g)

Coffee: ~90–120mg per 150ml cup

While Matcha generally has less caffeine than coffee, drinking large amounts can still cause similar side effects like insomnia, jitteriness, or anxiety.

The good news is that Matcha also contains L-theanine, an amino acid that helps counterbalance caffeine’s stimulating effects, promoting calm focus.

✅ Recommended daily intake: 1–2 cups

This amount lets you enjoy all the benefits of Matcha while keeping caffeine intake moderate.

Incorporate Matcha into your daily life and experience the health and beauty benefits firsthand.

Matcha often calls to mind a vibrant green tea served with Japanese sweets.

Yet its cup holds over a thousand years of history and culture.

In recent decades, “MATCHA” has become a global phenomenon, driving café menus and wellness trends worldwide.

This article uncovers matcha’s origins, unique stories, must‑visit tea houses, and its soaring international popularity.

Matcha’s roots trace back to China’s Tang Dynasty (618–907).

Back then, tea leaves were stone‑ground into a fine powder and whisked into hot water.

Japanese envoys and Zen monks brought this method to Japan.

In 1191, the monk Eisai linked matcha with Zen practice and published Kissa Yojoki, calling matcha “a source of health.”

By the Muromachi period (1336–1573) in Japan, the samurai class embraced the tea ceremony (“chanoyu”).

With Sen no Rikyū’s influence (1522–1591), the concepts of wabi (“rustic simplicity”) and sabi (“elegant imperfection”) shaped a uniquely Japanese tea ritual.

From that point on, matcha became both a refined drink and a path to spiritual cultivation.

Many legendary figures loved matcha.

Oda Nobunaga (1534–1582) and Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536–1598) were avid tea ceremony hosts.

Hideyoshi famously gathered over a thousand guests for a grand tea event in Kyoto’s Kitano district. Such affairs doubled as political and diplomatic gatherings.

Today, temples in Kyoto still offer “matcha and zazen” experiences, blending meditation with tea for tourists seeking authentic Zen culture.

Yakitori is often seen as a simple and familiar street food or izakaya staple in Japan.

But beneath its humble appearance lies a rich history, refined techniques, and growing global popularity that even many Japanese people may not fully realize.

This article dives into the lesser-known aspects of yakitori and explores how it connects with global grilling traditions.

The Origins and Evolution of Yakitori

Yakitori, or grilled chicken skewers, has its origins in the Edo period (around 1689), where the name first appeared in historical documents.

However, the style we know today—chicken pieces skewered and grilled over charcoal—didn’t become widespread until the Meiji era, nearly 200 years later.

At the time, chicken was a luxury item, and yakitori was not yet an everyday food.

People used not only meat but also organ meats to avoid waste. As charcoal grilling techniques spread among the public, yakitori gradually evolved into a skilled craft.

Today, skilled chefs offer a variety of cuts, each grilled and seasoned to bring out its unique flavor.

While most people enjoy popular cuts like thigh (momo) or breast (mune), yakitori also includes more unique parts:

Nankotsu (cartilage): Crunchy and often enjoyed for its texture.

These lesser-known parts not only add variety but also offer rich nutrition when prepared with care.

2. The Art of Grilling and Seasoning

Yakitori is more than just grilled chicken. Charcoal grilling brings out a unique aroma and flavor, and seasoning is a delicate art.

Many shops use “secret sauces” (tare), each with its own balance of sweetness, saltiness, and umami.

These sauces are often aged and added to over the years, creating deep complexity.

Even the way skewers are arranged affects how heat is distributed and how the flavors are sealed in.

From seasoning to grilling to plating, every step reflects craftsmanship.

Surprisingly Healthy?

Yakitori isn’t just a tasty snack—it’s also gaining recognition as a balanced and health-conscious meal.

Lean meats like chicken breast and gizzards are low in fat and high in protein. Liver is rich in iron, and salt-seasoned yakitori offers a low-carb option for those watching their sugar intake.

This balance of taste and nutrition makes yakitori ideal for people looking for flavorful yet healthy food.

Behind the Scenes: The Yakitori Industry

Behind every skewer is a story of hard work—from sourcing ingredients to ensuring hygiene and maintaining quality.

One seasoned chef explained, “The secret to great yakitori is respecting the ingredient and mastering the heat.”

These behind-the-scenes efforts remind us that yakitori isn’t fast food—it’s a deeply rooted craft and part of Japanese culinary culture.

Yakitori-style skewered meats can be found around the world:

Onigiri, or Japanese rice balls, have been a staple in Japan for centuries.

In fact, archaeologists have discovered carbonized rice balls dating back 2,000 years—can you believe it?

That’s how deeply rooted onigiri is in Japanese food culture.

(Japanese rice balls onigiri)

Recently, onigiri has been gaining global attention as a healthy food.

Over time, the starch in rice transforms into resistant starch, a type of dietary fiber that supports digestion and may aid in weight management.

In this article, we’ll take you on a tour of Japan’s most unique regional onigiri.

You’ll be amazed at the variety of ingredients mixed into or wrapped around these rice balls.

Onigiri is the ultimate freestyle food—it pairs well with almost anything!

When you visit Japan, you’re sure to find the perfect onigiri to match your taste.

To start, let’s explore some delightful onigiri from regions north of Shizuoka—celebrated for Mount Fuji—showcasing Japan’s creative twist on this traditional rice ball.

The combination of Yumepirika rice, fresh asparagus, dried salmon flakes, and melted cheese creates a savory aroma and taste that will leave a lasting impression.

If you think Japanese people know everything about their own food, think again!

Even many locals have never explored the perfect pairings of onigiri (rice balls) and Japanese tea—a combination that has existed for centuries but remains a hidden gem of Japanese cuisine.

Imagine this: You’re in Japan, sitting in a traditional teahouse or a quiet park, unwrapping a freshly made onigiri.

A Japanese friend offers you a cup of tea—but which one? Would a deep, rich sencha bring out the best flavors?

Or would a roasted hojicha create an unexpected harmony?

The truth is, most Japanese people don’t think deeply about matching their rice balls with tea.

But if you do, you’ll not only elevate your food experience—you’ll also have a surprising fact to share with locals!

In this guide, we’ll explore the art of pairing regional onigiri with the perfect Japanese tea—a topic that might just make you more of a food expert than the average Tokyoite.

1. Shio Musubi × Hojicha: A Perfectly Roasted Harmony

Shio musubi, a simple rice ball seasoned only with salt, highlights the pure flavor of Japanese rice.

The absence of additional fillings allows the natural sweetness and texture of the rice to shine.

When paired with hojicha, a roasted green tea with nutty and slightly caramelized notes, the result is a warm, comforting combination.

Hojicha’s roasted aroma and mild bitterness balance the saltiness of the rice, creating a soothing contrast.

This pairing is especially enjoyable in the evening, as hojicha is naturally low in caffeine, making it a perfect way to unwind after a long day.

Best enjoyed: Warm, with a focus on savoring the simplicity of each bite !

2. Sake Onigiri × Sencha: The Umami Boost

Sake onigiri, filled with salted salmon, is a favorite among Japanese people.

The rich umami of the salmon pairs beautifully with sencha, Japan’s most commonly consumed green tea.

Sencha’s bright, grassy flavor and slight astringency cut through the richness of the salmon, cleansing the palate and enhancing its savory depth.

This pairing is a celebration of umami, one of the fundamental tastes in Japanese cuisine.

The light bitterness of sencha enhances the subtle smokiness of the salmon, making each bite taste even fresher.

Best enjoyed: At lunchtime, when you need a refreshing yet satisfying meal.

3. Ume Onigiri × Genmaicha: A Balance of Tart and Toasty

Umeboshi (pickled plum) onigiri is a classic with a strong, tangy kick.

The bold acidity of umeboshi stimulates the taste buds, making it a popular choice for a quick pick-me-up.

To balance this intensity, genmaicha, a tea blended with roasted rice, provides a warm, nutty flavor that mellows out the sourness.

Genmaicha’s toasty aroma and gentle bitterness create a pleasant contrast, preventing the umeboshi from overwhelming the palate.

This pairing is both nostalgic and comforting, reminiscent of traditional Japanese home cooking.

Best enjoyed: As an afternoon snack or picnic treat, offering both refreshment and satisfaction.

4. Kombu Onigiri × Gyokuro: A Luxurious Contrast

Kombu onigiri, filled with simmered kelp, brings a deep umami flavor with a slightly sweet undertone.

This makes it an ideal match for gyokuro, a premium Japanese green tea known for its rich umami and smooth, velvety texture.

Unlike other green teas, gyokuro is shaded before harvest, leading to a high concentration of theanine, which gives it a naturally sweet and mellow character.

This pairs exquisitely with the briny sweetness of kombu, enhancing its complexity without overpowering it.

Best enjoyed: As a special treat, allowing time to savor the layered flavors.

Conclusion: Discover Your Perfect Pairing

Pairing onigiri with the right tea can elevate both elements, creating a more memorable dining experience.

Whether you prefer the roasted depth of hojicha, the refreshing brightness of sencha, the comforting toastiness of genmaicha, or the luxurious smoothness of gyokuro, there’s a perfect match for every taste.

Next time you enjoy onigiri, consider pairing it with a thoughtfully chosen tea—and surprise even your Japanese friends with your knowledge of these unique flavor combinations!

Imagine visiting Japan and surprising your local friends with a fascinating tale they’ve never heard before.

It’s the perfect conversation starter—one that will make your trip even more unforgettable.

As you explore Japan, uncovering little-known facts like this could lead you to deeper connections and unexpected discoveries.

Today, we’re sharing a remarkable secret about Japan’s beloved sakura—one that will change the way you see these breathtaking blooms forever.

Japan’s Cherry Blossoms: A Genetic Mystery

Japan’s most iconic cherry blossom variety, the Somei Yoshino (Yoshino cherry tree), is admired for its breathtaking beauty—but did you know that every single tree of this species is genetically identical?

That’s right—each Somei Yoshino tree is a clone of the original!

But where did that first tree come from? When was it first cultivated?

These questions remain unanswered, and researchers are still on a quest to uncover the true origins of Japan’s most beloved sakura.

Tracing the Roots of Somei Yoshino: A Journey to Its Birthplace

If you visit Someiyoshino Sakura Memorial Park in Komagome, Toshima Ward, Tokyo, you’ll find a monument proudly declaring this area as the “Birthplace of Somei Yoshino.”

Long ago, this district was known as Somei, and during the Edo period, it flourished as a major hub for gardening.

With high demand from the grand estates of feudal lords, Somei became one of Japan’s leading centers for cultivating flowers and trees—paving the way for the creation of the iconic Somei Yoshino cherry blossom.

The Mysterious Origins of Somei Yoshino: A Cherry Blossom with an Unknown Past

During the late Edo to early Meiji period, gardeners from Somei began selling a new variety of cherry blossom under the name “Yoshino Sakura.”

The name was inspired by the famous cherry blossom-covered Mount Yoshino in Nara.

As Japan’s transportation network expanded, this beautiful tree spread across the country, eventually becoming the nation’s most iconic sakura.

Somei, known as “Edo’s horticultural center,” was home to highly skilled gardeners.

Shin’ichi Akiyama, a curator at Toshima Historical Museum, highlights the area’s deep connection to Japan’s gardening traditions.

Yet, the true origins of Somei Yoshino remain shrouded in mystery.

The name “Somei Yoshino” first appeared in written records in 1900, when botanist Yorinaga Fujino published a report in the Japan Horticultural Society Journal.

While admiring the cherry blossoms in Ueno Park, Fujino noticed they were different from the wild mountain cherries of Yoshino, Nara.

Realizing they had a distinct origin, he named them “Somei Yoshino” after the place where they were cultivated.

Even today, the exact birthplace of Somei Yoshino remains unknown, adding to the enduring intrigue of Japan’s most beloved sakura.

Solving the Mystery: DNA Research Unlocks the Origins of Somei Yoshino

The advancement of molecular biology has become a powerful tool in uncovering the origins of the Somei Yoshino cherry blossom.

With the introduction of DNA analysis, scientists first identified the maternal lineage of Somei Yoshino as Edo Higan (Prunus itosakura).

Further studies revealed that the paternal lineage comes from Oshima Zakura (Prunus speciosa)—though some theories suggest it may be a hybrid between Oshima Zakura and Yamazakura.

Genome sequencing research suggests that Somei Yoshino’s two ancestral species diverged around 5.52 million years ago.

Then, just over a century ago, these long-separated species hybridized, giving birth to the world’s most famous cherry blossom.

The Fragile Future of Somei Yoshino: A Cherry Blossom Dependent on Humans

Despite its widespread beauty, Somei Yoshino has a biological limitation—it cannot reproduce naturally through self-pollination.

This is due to a trait called self-incompatibility, meaning that Somei Yoshino trees cannot produce offspring by crossing with one another.

While they can hybridize with other cherry species, the resulting trees would be entirely new varieties.

In other words, Somei Yoshino cannot survive without human intervention.

If humanity were to suddenly disappear, these iconic cherry blossoms would no longer propagate on their own.

Over time, as each tree reached the end of its lifespan, Somei Yoshino would gradually vanish from the world.

Currently, the only way to propagate Somei Yoshino is through grafting—a process where cuttings from a parent tree are attached to a rootstock to grow new trees.

The original Somei Yoshino likely emerged when pollen from one cherry tree was carried—by wind, insects, or human hands—to the pistil of another, creating the very first hybrid.

Though admired by millions every spring, Somei Yoshino remains a delicate, human-dependent species—its very existence intertwined with our care.

Unraveling the Mystery of Somei Yoshino’s Origins: A Genetic Quest

Clues from Ueno Park

How close can we get to the original tree of Somei Yoshino?

This question continues to drive researchers in their quest to uncover the roots of Japan’s most beloved cherry blossom.

Professor Ikuro Nakamura, a plant geneticist at Chiba University, has been investigating Somei Yoshino trees near Prince Komatsu Akihito’s statue in Ueno Park, Tokyo.

Among them stands the original tree of Komatsu Otome, an Edo Higan variety.

Genetic analysis of six Edo Higan trees, including Komatsu Otome, and four Somei Yoshino trees in the park revealed that one of the Somei Yoshino trees is likely a sibling of Komatsu Otome.

“This suggests that not only Komatsu Otome but also Somei Yoshino may have originated here,” Nakamura explains.

Based on the planting arrangement, he has identified one tree as a strong candidate for the original Somei Yoshino.

Interestingly, this site was once home to the bell tower of Kan’ei-ji Temple, which had deep ties to the Tokugawa shogunate.

Historically, the land was owned by the Toda clan of Tsu Domain, who later moved their estate to Somei in Komagome—the birthplace of Somei Yoshino.

Genetic Analysis and the Search for the Original Tree

To trace Somei Yoshino’s lineage, a research team from Kazusa DNA Research Institute, Shimane University, and Kyoto Prefectural University conducted a genomic analysis on 46 Somei Yoshino trees across 19 prefectures.

Although Somei Yoshino trees are genetic clones propagated by grafting, mutations naturally occur as the trees grow.

When a mutated branch is used for grafting, the next generation carries that mutation.

By tracking these mutations, scientists can categorize trees into different lineages and work backward toward the original tree.

The study grouped the 46 trees into six genetic clusters, with the four Ueno Park trees each belonging to different clusters.

According to Kenta Shirasawa, a lead researcher at Kazusa DNA Research Institute, this finding suggests that Ueno Park’s trees were not randomly gathered from across Japan, but rather that they originated there and were later spread nationwide.

One of the four trees, which closely matches the genetic sequences of Somei Yoshino’s parent species (Edo Higan and Oshima Zakura), is now considered the closest known tree to the original Somei Yoshino.

The Search for a Chimera Tree

In fruit trees, ‘bud mutations’ (eda-gawari) can produce branches with unique characteristics, such as larger fruit or increased disease resistance.

Shirasawa theorizes that the original Somei Yoshino tree may have been a chimera, with different genetic mutations in its branches.

This could explain the presence of several genetic groups in Ueno Park.

To test this theory, the team has begun searching for ancient Somei Yoshino trees across Japan.

Their first target was two trees in Koishikawa Botanical Garden, Tokyo, planted between the late Edo and early Meiji periods.

However, so far, they have not been confirmed as the original tree.

With cutting-edge genome sequencing technology, researchers hope to solve one of Japan’s greatest botanical mysteries: Where did Somei Yoshino originate?

As spring arrives, Japan’s cherry blossoms bloom from south to north, gradually transforming the landscape as if a vast pink carpet is being unrolled.

This breathtaking spectacle draws visitors from around the world, who marvel at the delicate petals dancing in the wind.

Perhaps, as you stand beneath the cherry blossoms, catching a drifting petal in your hand, you’ll find yourself sharing this remarkable story—one that even many Japanese people do not yet know.
